Off Campus Work Study: Tutoring and Mentoring Youth – Higher Achievement (Federal Work Study Only)

Position Summary:  

Reporting to Center Learning Directors, Work Study Participants will directly engage with Higher Achievement scholars, supporting middle school students in developing critical social and behavioral skills, improving academic performance, and fostering habits that lead to top high school placements. Higher Achievement provides rigorous, year-round academic enrichment in a positive, respectful, and fun environment. Work Study Participants will assist with learning blocks, community meetings, and other center activities, contributing to a culture of high expectations and achievement. Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Academic Support:  
  • Assist scholars with homework and upcoming assignments.  
  • Clarify and re-teach fundamental concepts as needed.  
  • Behavior and Culture Reinforcement:  
  • Model and uphold Higher Achievement’s core philosophies, ensuring scholars meet        
  • high expectations.  
  • Support the center’s behavior management and incentive systems.  
  • Activity Supervision:  
  • Provide oversight and behavior management during scholar activities.  
  • Incorporate scholar ideas into elective activities when appropriate.  
  • Operational Support:  
  • Complete administrative tasks such as greeting and checking in with scholars, serving   
  • meals, data entry, making phone calls, and preparing daily materials.  
  • Ensure that the host site is clean and organized at the end of the day.  

Qualifications: 

  • Currently enrolled in a College/University and in good academic standing.  
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize   
  • tasks effectively.  
  • Prior experience working with middle school youth is beneficial but not required.  
  • Interest in youth development, educational access, and social justice is highly encouraged.  

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Work is performed in a school environment and may involve sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods.  
  • Regular lifting, carrying, and positioning of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.  
  • Frequent use of computers and participation in virtual and in-person meetings.  
  • Clear, professional communication in small group settings with adults.  
  • Ability to respond quickly to critical incidents and emergencies.  
  • Reasonable accommodation will be provided for individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.  

Location: Brookland Middle School, 1150 Michigan Ave NE, Washington, DC 20017 

Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 3:30–6:30 PM (up to 15 hours per week; flexibility may be possible. 

Work Period: September through May
