Millicent Okoro is a Biochemistry student at Trinity Washington University with a passion for scientific research, medicine, mentorship, and community impact. As a first-generation immigrant who navigated much of her educational journey independently, she has remained committed to transforming adversity into purpose through scholarship, leadership, and service.
During her time at Trinity, Millicent has served as Gold Class President, student researcher, tutor, and mentor. Her research focuses on the epigenetic regulation of neural genes, particularly how DNA methylation influences brain function. She has co-authored a publication on intimate partner violence and traumatic brain injury and has presented her research at scientific conferences, including the Northeast Scientific Symposium (NESS) at Harvard Medical School.
This summer, Millicent is conducting research at Yale University, where she is exploring mechanisms of tissue repair and regeneration while continuing to pursue her interests in neuroscience, epigenetics, and public health. Her long-term goal is to earn an MD/PhD and become a physician-scientist dedicated to advancing research and improving health outcomes for underserved communities.
Beyond the laboratory, Millicent is passionate about mentorship, education, and creating opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Through research, leadership, and community engagement, she strives to make science more accessible while empowering others to pursue their goals with confidence, resilience, and purpose.
