Wednesday, January 20, 2021, marks the 59th Presidential Inauguration Ceremony, and the inauguration of Joe Biden as President and Kamala Harris as Vice President. As a women’s college, Trinity celebrates the inauguration of Kamala Harris, who is making history as the first woman, first Black American and first South Asian American elected to serve as vice president of the United States. As a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) and a D.C. university, located just one mile from Howard University, Trinity celebrates as Harris, a Howard graduate, becomes the highest elected woman in American history. Once she and Biden are sworn in, she will be second in line to the presidency. Third in line to the presidency is Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a graduate of Trinity who broke the “Marble Ceiling” when she became the first and only woman elected Speaker of the House.
Trinity students met both Biden and Harris when they spoke on Trinity’s campus in June 2019, as presidential candidates invited to the Poor People’s Campaign Conference. In January 2020, then-Senator Kamala Harris stopped in the halls of the U.S. Capitol to talk with several Trinity students who had just witnessed the impeachment trial of the president, as guests of Speaker Pelosi.
