Trinity Washington University Announces the Appointment of Dr. Christine Carrino Gorowara, Dean of the School of Education
February 21, 2023
President Patricia McGuire has appointed Dr. Christine Carrino Gorowara as the new Dean of the School of Education at Trinity Washington University. Dr. Gorowara joins Trinity’s leadership team from the University of Delaware where she has been a member of the Education faculty and the senior associate director of the Center for Excellence and Equity in Teacher Preparation. A mathematician by academic background, Dr. Gorowara brings her keen analytical ability to the urgent need to develop strong evidence based practices in teacher education. She is currently co-editing a volume about assessment and accountability entitled Effectively Using Data for Educator Preparation Program Improvement due for publication later this year.
Dr. Gorowara has extensive leadership experience in the accreditation of teacher education programs. She served as vice president of the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), and then subsequently as vice president of the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). She also participated in the founding of the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). Dr. Gorowara has recently been elected to the board of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE) and has been president of the Delaware Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. She has been an active leader and participant in many other educational organizations. She has participated in numerous initiatives addressing diversifying the teacher pipeline, ensuring culturally responsive competence in Delaware educator preparation graduates, and incorporating anti-racist curriculum in PK-12 schools. She co-led the founding of a Montessori charter school to serve low income families in Delaware.
Dr. Gorowara earned her B.A. in Mathematics at the University of Akron, M.S. in Mathematics at Ohio State, and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Concentration in Mathematics Education at the University of Delaware. She also holds a certificate in Regulatory Analysis and Decision Making from the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law.
At Trinity, Dr. Gorowara will lead one of the university’s oldest professional programs. While Trinity has always educated teachers through its liberal arts programs since its first graduating class, in the 1960’s Trinity added licensure and certification through the M.A.T., M. Ed. and M.S.A. programs, and later added the B.A. in Education in the undergraduate program. More recently, Trinity has expanded its Education programs to include certificates and associate degrees for Early Childhood Education aligned with the District of Columbia’s expectations for child care teachers; Trinity participates in the Advancing Cities Partnership funded by J.P. Morgan to support child care personnel in Wards 7 and 8. Trinity also offers extensive continuing education for teachers and school leaders. Trinity’s education programs are accredited by CAEP and approved through OSSE, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education.
Trinity is celebrating its 125th Anniversary as one of the nation’s oldest Catholic women’s colleges, retaining the daytime women’s college in the College of Arts and Sciences while also providing coeducational programming in professional programs including the School of Education, School of Nursing and Health Professions, and School of Professional and Graduate Studies. Trinity is a proud partner of the D.C. Public Schools with the Coolidge Early College Academy graduating its first class in May 2023. In partnership with DCPS, OSSE and numerous schools, Trinity also provides dual enrollment opportunities for ambitious high school students who want to get a head start on their college careers.
