Teaching is an art and skill that requires awareness, creativity, planning and consistency. For me,
teaching is a process of providing knowledge to students while building on their previous experiences,
encouraging them to take strategic risks in their thinking, and empowering them to use the knowledge
in ways that are beneficial to them and their community. Teaching is an experience that requires the
professor to be genuine and connected to the humanness of the students thus allowing the professor to
teach the students the content based on the student’s learning styles as well as any subsequent skills,
traits or experiences the students need to compliment the content and to extend the application of the
knowledge. For this to occur, the professor must be aware of the students’ needs and experiences,
creative in approaches to include the incorporation of various learning styles, organized and plan to
ensure that the content is thoroughly covered, and consistent to allow for predictability and safety
within the classroom setting.
Oftentimes, educators are taught various methods to teach the content and thus professors use
techniques and interventions that they are most comfortable applying in the classroom. These
techniques and interventions are often a reflection of the professor’s preference or individual learning
style thus creating a void in what the students need. I believe that it is important for me to know my
students; know how they learn, how they think, and what kinds of experiences they need in order to
deepen the content. This requires me to be genuine with them, to share experiences with them and to
know what they need to learn. Therefore, I prefer to incorporate various learning styles and creative
practices in the classroom to engage the students, validate their uniqueness, and deepen their learning.
Additionally, utilizing creativity in conjunction with the learning styles promotes student eagerness in
the content thus motivating the students to want
