1948 In Memoriam

Annemarie (Cowhig) Farrell

Annemarie Cowhig Farrell passed away peacefully on January 24th after a brief illness, at Berkshire Medical Center, a facility she was proud to support for many years.
Mrs. Farrell was born on December 31, 1926. She was the daughter of Joseph T. Cowhig and Adeline Bligh Cowhig. She graduated from Lenox High School as valedictorian and from Trinity College in Washington DC.
Annemarie is survived by her nine children and their spouses: Joseph W. and Mary Lou Gibson Farrell of Snowmass Village, CO, Mary F. and Paul Robinson of Philadelphia, PA, Anne F. and Rocky Clark of Portland, ME, Kate F. and Gary Mayne of Lenox, MA, Francis X. and Denise Sabert Farrell of Yorktown Heights, NY, Thomas B. and Kathy Wall Farrell of Portland, ME, John F. and Jane Zwally Farrell of Hilton Head, SC, Margaret F. and William Goggins of Newport News, VA, and Jane F. and John DeCoursey of Yorktown Heights, NY.

Elizabeth “Betty” (Keane) Fitzpatrick

Elizabeth Keane Fitzpatrick (Betty), a 65 -year resident of the Village of Scarsdale, died peacefully at her home on November 23, 2019. Betty, the oldest of the five Keane siblings who were raised on Park Road in Scarsdale, attended the Yonkers Public schools in her early life before her family moved to Scarsdale. As a child, Betty spent many happy hours in the garden with her beloved father John and playing sports at Our Lady of Lourdes Camp in upstate New York with her beloved sister Nancy. A graduate of Scarsdale High School, Betty attended Trinity College in Washington, DC. Betty thrived at Trinity, an all-girls Catholic school, where she excelled at mathematics and sports and where she was elected her senior class president. At Trinity she met the love of her life, her future husband Joseph Fitzpatrick, a night law student at Georgetown University who worked in the Patent Office of the United States Department of Justice. They were married at Immaculate Conception in Tuckahoe in 1949 and moved from Washington DC to New York for Joe’s legal practice in 1954.

Anne (McNamara) Griffith

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Anne M. Griffith (Alexandria, Virginia), who passed away on September 27, 2020, leaving to mourn family and friends. You can send your sympathy in the guestbook provided and share it with the family. You may also light a candle in honor of Anne M. Griffith.

She was predeceased by : her husband Stephen M. Griffith; and her parents, Margaret Boughan McNamara and J. Burton McNamara. She is survived by : her children, John Griffith, Stephen M. Griffith, Jr. (Jane), Joseph Griffith (Lora), Benjamin Griffith, Mark Griffith (Tatjana), Anne Hennessy (Peter) and Susan Giuliani (Mark); her grandchildren, Kay Griffith, Claire Griffith, Christian Griffith, Amy Griffith, Matthew Hennessy, Andrew Hennessy, Katherine Hennessy, Vivian Griffith, Sophia Griffith, Margot Giuliani, Maddy Giuliani and Joe Giuliani; and her great grandchild James Griffith. She is also survived by Five sons, two daughters, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Anne McNamara Griffith Anne McNamara Griffith, daughter of Margaret Boughan McNamara and J. Burton McNamara, was born in Cambridge, MA. She died on September 27, 2020 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. Her parents and husband, Colonel Stephen M. Griffith, United States Army, predeceased her. She was 94 years old. Anne graduated in 1948 with a B.A. from Trinity College in Washington, DC. After graduation she returned to Chicago, IL where she worked as a trade magazine editor for the Thor Corporation. In 1952 she married Stephen. She supported our nation, her husband and her family as a military spouse from 1952 until 1975. She masterfully managed two overseas tours with seven children to Berlin and Frankfurt, Germany at the height of the Cold War. And, she maintained strength and faith during her husband’s year-long deployments to South Korea in 1960 and The Republic of Vietnam in 1969. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s she worked part time as a tour guide in Washington, DC and took pride in providing civics lessons and showcasing our national treasures and monuments to student groups who travelled from all points across the United States and abroad to visit our Nation’s Capital. During the administration of President Ronald Reagan, she served in the Office of the Chief of Staff as well as the National Security Council. And during the administrations of President George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush she served in the Office of Presidential Correspondence. She derived great satisfaction during the years she served on the staff of First Lady Barbara Bush. Anne was an active member of various societies and organizations to include the Steuben-Schurz-Gesellschaft e.V. and The International Women’s Club e.V. in Frankfurt, Germany, the West Point Alumni Association Class of 1948 and the West Point Department of Social Sciences Faculty Alumni. She also served as an advisor to the Fairfax County Zoning Commission, was active in Republican Party Politics in Northern Virginia and served as a volunteer in support of election day activities at Fort Hunt Elementary School in Alexandria, VA. She is survived by her sons Stephen M. Griffith, Jr. (Jane), Joseph Griffith (Lora), Beau Griffith, Benjamin Griffith, and Colonel Mark Griffith, United States Army, Retired (Tatjana), and her daughters Anne Hennessy (Peter) and Susan Giuliani (Mark). She leaves behind 12 grandchildren Kay Griffith, Claire Griffith, Christian Griffith, Amy Griffith, Matthew Hennessy, Andrew Hennessy, Katherine Hennessy, Vivian Griffith, Sophia Griffith, Margot Giuliani, Maddy Giuliani, Joe Giuliani, and one great-grandson, James Griffith. The family will receive friends at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA on Thursday, October 22, 2020 from 2 until 4 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2020 at the Basilica of St. Mary, 310 South Royal Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. The Archdiocese of Arlington requires that family and friends follow social distancing protocols and wear masks during the service. Her internment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a future date.

Patricia (Dugan) Hines

Patricia (Dugan) Hines, Age 93, born February 22, 1926 in Milton, MA, passed away peacefully in Deerfield Beach, FL on January 25, 2020. Devoted wife of Robert E. Hines (deceased), beloved mother of Nancy Hines (Cleo Coy, deceased), Jack Hines (Marcy Fenton Hines), Kate Hines (Christopher Hearn), Robert Hines, Jr. (Anne Matthews). Cherished grandmother of Andy Hines (Keegan Cook Finberg) and Henry Hines. Loving great-grandmother of Zev Wilton Finberg-Hines. Dear sister of Owen Dugan and Sheila Block. Adored aunt to many and friend to all. Patricia was part of a large Irish Catholic family with historic roots in New England. She attended Thayer Academy and was a graduate of Trinity College in Washington, DC. Patricia loved raising her family and made sure they were comfortable and accepted as the family moved from Boston to Chicago, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and back to Boston in just a few short years.

Lea Marie (Gendreau) LaPorte

Lea Marie (Gendreau) LaPorte 93, a resident of Seabrook Beach, NH and Delray Beach, FL., passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 18, 2020.  She was the beloved wife of Roland A. LaPorte for over 70 years.
Lea was the daughter of the late Dr. Raymond J. and Lea (Archambault) Gendreau, born in Lowell, MA on January 3, 1927. She was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy, Tyngsborough and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Trinity College, Washington, D.C. in 1948.
She was a stay at home Mom, active in church and civic affairs. She was a founder and past president of the Friends of St. Joseph’s Hospital, one of the founders of the D’Youville Manor Ladies Guild and a member of Catholic College of Lowell.

Mary Irene Lanagan

Mary Irene Lanagan, Beloved Aunt, Teacher, and Friend Age 93, died peacefully on September 9, 2019, in Oakland, CA. A beloved aunt, teacher, and friend, she was born February 6, 1926 in Providence, RI, to Irene Veronica (Heaney) Lanigan and Joseph Anthony Lanigan. A longtime resident of Newton Highlands, MA, Lanigan taught literature at Newton North High School for 42 years. She served as Head of the Department of English there for 30 of those years, a job she considered the best in the world. Her work was founded on her belief that “all of us have the potential to grow and realize who we are and what we can be.”

Patricia (Bryan) Wilbur

Dr. Patricia Bryan Wilber died peacefully in her Atlanta home on Feb. 9, 2020, surrounded and supported by her four loving children. She was born on March 18, 1927, in Athens, GA to Malcolm Honore Bryan and Nan Coghlan Bryan. Pat, as she liked to be called, moved with her family to Atlanta in 1938. She graduated from Christ the King School in 1945 then went on to earn a degree in chemistry from Trinity College in Washington DC. In 1948 she was accepted into Harvard Medical School and was one of only 6 women to graduate in the class of 1952. It was at Harvard that she met her husband of 58 years, Dr. Joseph A. Wilber. After spending a year living in Oxford, England, she and Joe moved back to Atlanta where she went to work in several Public Heath related areas.
