Acclaimed author and scholar Clint Smith will be joining us for a special talk on Tuesday, September 23rd at 10:30 a.m. in the O’Connor Auditorium.
This event is a cornerstone of our Trinity Reads program, which this year features Smith’s powerful book, How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America.
At a critical moment in our nation’s history, Smith’s work is a powerful model of how scholarship can stand fast in the truth. He interrogates the conflicts at the heart of the American project by visiting historical sites of American slavery and deconstructing how they are remembered today.
This is a unique opportunity for our community to hear directly from the author, a Harvard PhD who once taught high school in the DMV.
We extend our deep gratitude to Dr. Rewa Burnham and Dr. Jamey Piland, for their support in planning and through the Teagle Foundation. And to Dr. Kimberly Monroe, who has been instrumental in securing Clint Smith as a guest on campus, as well as supporting the event with funding from The Rare Book School.
We encourage everyone to attend and join us in this important journey of understanding lived experiences and how history is preserved.
