Trinity Celebrates America250

September 17 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

In this 250th year of our great American Democracy, the Trinity community will engage in a series of conversations, guided by our learned faculty, focusing on key issues in understanding and protecting our rights and freedoms.  Appropriately, we have chosen to launch this program on September 17, Constitution Day!  At 5 pm on September 17, in Payden 104, Dean Tom Mostowy (a lawyer and former judge) will present an overview of the Constitution and Bill of Rights with discussion of key issues today.  Following Dean Mostowy, Newsroom Director Chaz Muth (an award-winning journalist now directing the Trinity Times and student media) will lead a conversation with our student journalists about the current state of freedom of the press.  We have alsoinvited a notable Trinity alumna journalist to join us.

Refreshments will be there!  And your active engagement with the conversation is important.

Series Introduction: The Constitution and Bill of Rights:  Dean Tom Mostowy presents an overarching review of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and leads students in discussion of key issues

Conversation #1:  Freedom of Press and Speech: Mr. Chaz Muth, faculty and students from the Trinity Times discuss the state of press freedom in America: how has the engagement of major corporate interests in ownership of media outlets changed the idea of freedom of the press? What is the ABC lawsuit against the government all about?  What about emerging nonprofit models of journalism?
